Star Gazing / Summit Experience / Dark Sky Project / Lake Tekapo

Discover the wonders of the southern night sky on a guided stargazing experience at the University of Canterbury Mount John Observatory in Lake Tekapo / Takapō. Travel by coach to the summit of Mount John, where expert astronomy guides introduce Māori and Western astronomy through naked-eye stargazing and powerful telescopes, including a 16-inch telescope housed inside a private observatory dome. Explore constellations, planets, star clusters and distant celestial objects beneath the dark skies of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.

LOCATION

Dark Sky Project Base, 1 Motuariki Lane, Lake Tekapo / Takapō, New Zealand. The stargazing experience takes place at the University of Canterbury Mount John Observatory.

DURATION

Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes, including return transport to the summit.

TIMINGS

Evening departures operate throughout the year, with tour times varying according to sunset and seasonal conditions. Available seven days a week, subject to availability.

LAST ENTRY / CHECK-IN

Check in at Dark Sky Project Base at least 20 minutes before the scheduled departure. Late arrivals may be treated as no-shows.
