Pattaya is a beach resort city on Thailand's eastern Gulf coast, about two hours by road from Bangkok — known for its cabaret shows, the Sanctuary of Truth, and boat trips to Koh Larn.

Getting around
Baht buses (shared songthaews), ride-hailing apps and private drivers

Pattaya has reinvented itself as a family and weekend destination as much as a nightlife one. The Sanctuary of Truth, a vast hand-carved wooden temple, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden and the cabaret theatres draw most visitors.

Koh Larn (Coral Island), a short ferry ride offshore, has clearer water and calmer beaches than the city itself.

Arriving

Getting to Pattaya

  • Most visitors arrive via Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and travel on by road — about one and a half to two hours, depending on traffic.
  • U-Tapao International Airport (UTP), south of Pattaya, has a smaller number of domestic and regional flights.
  • A private transfer from either Bangkok airport goes door to door, which matters with luggage.

Private transfers in Pattaya start from ฿880 — compare 79 options.

On the ground

Getting around Pattaya

  • Baht buses — shared pick-up trucks — loop along Beach Road and Second Road for a small flat fare. Agree the price first if you take one privately.
  • Ride-hailing apps work well in the city.
  • Ferries and speedboats to Koh Larn leave from Bali Hai Pier at the south end of Walking Street.
Where to stay

The best areas to stay in Pattaya

Central Pattaya
Beach Road and the main shopping and dining strip — central and busy.
Walking Street area
The nightlife district at the south end of the bay. Lively at night; not the place for a quiet stay.
Naklua & Wongamat
North of the centre, quieter, with some of the city's better beaches and the Sanctuary of Truth.
Pratumnak Hill
Between Pattaya and Jomtien, residential and calm, with small beaches.
Jomtien
A long beach south of the hill, popular with families and longer-stay visitors.
Planning

How many days in Pattaya?

Two to four days: one for the Sanctuary of Truth and a show, one for Koh Larn, and one for Nong Nooch or the water parks.

Know before you go

Pattaya travel tips

  • Book cabaret show seats in advance at weekends and in high season.
  • The Sanctuary of Truth asks visitors to dress modestly; it is an active religious site as well as an attraction.
  • Check the weather the day before a Koh Larn trip — rough seas make the speedboat crossing uncomfortable.
